Why is the term confusing?
Orchestration means arranging several parts so they act together. In identity, vendors apply it to different parts. A buyer who searches for identity orchestration tools will find products that do quite different jobs, and comparing them only makes sense once you know which job you need.
Meaning 1: feeding findings into the tools you already run
Orchid Security lists Orchestrate as one of four platform capabilities, next to Discover, Analyze and Audit, and its IAM programs page talks about connecting and feeding identity context into IAM, IGA and ITSM tools. Its Costco story describes ServiceNow and Jira ticketing. In this meaning, orchestration turns a discovery (an orphaned account in an unmanaged app) into an action in the system that owns the fix (a ticket, an IGA task).
Meaning 2: building sign-in and user journeys
Ping Identity describes PingOne DaVinci as a cloud orchestration service for building user journeys with drag-and-drop, no-code flows, delivered as multi-tenant SaaS, and its marketplace lists 6,500+ orchestrated capabilities across 350+ connectors. Here orchestration is about assembling the steps of a sign-in or registration flow across services. It works at the moment of authentication.
Meaning 3: brokering access on request
Apono describes just-in-time cloud privileged access for humans, machines and AI agents across 85+ integrations. Some buyers call this orchestration too, because a request triggers a time-bound grant in another system. It works on access to systems already connected.
How this site uses the word
Our criterion "Orchestrates through the existing stack" uses meaning 1. It asks whether a tool feeds findings and actions into the IdP, IGA, PAM and ITSM tools already in place rather than requiring you to replace them. It is weighted 14% in the reach score.
Questions that separate the meanings
- What triggers the orchestration: a discovery, a sign-in or a request?
- Which systems receive the result, and through which integration?
- Who approves the change, and where is the approval recorded?
- Does the product make the change itself, or create a task for another system?
- What happens when the receiving system rejects the change?
